Why background checks are important when hiring an employee?

Okay, so you ask us why background checks are important when hiring an employee? To start with we would say that it’s important for the company to know who their employees are and what they previously did and if they have written the truth in their resumes. Though it’s not the case that everything written on a resume is not true but sometimes it has been observed that in some aspects or in a few cases, the whole resume is a lie. And company being in a bigger position can not really afford to get involved in any miss-happenings because of any employee and this is why background checks are important when hiring an employee.

What exactly happens in Background checks?

A complete review of the person’s history that includes person’s education, from where did he or she got his/her education from, how many degrees that person has, and the person’s previous company and how much work experience does that individual has and most importantly if that person has any criminal record against him/her etc. To provide the data there are many service providers who can help you get the background check done for the current or the future employees.

Here are a few points about why are background checks important when hiring an employee:-

1. To provide a safe workplace

We can’t underestimate the importance of why workplace safety is important. The employees spend most of their time in their offices so it eventually becomes the organisation’s fundamental duty to provide a safe space for them to work properly. And they probably spend more time in offices than their home so it comes naturally to the organisations to get the background check done. The HR team conducts an interview of so many people and we can’t deny the possibility of them interviewing the thief or a sexual predator or a murderer or just a criminal in general who has the ability to just commit and crime and if they hire the above-mentioned people, the employees would be at great risk and company would be held responsible for the uncertainty or any miss-happening. So, it’s for the greater good to get the background check done.

2. To reduce the occurrence of having a liability

Let’s take an example, suppose you have a vacancy for a fashion designer and you conducted the interview and the interview went well and now you hired the person you have interviewed. And one day you send that person to get the stuff done for one customer and the hired person firstly ruins the cloth and then argues with the customer, further leading to ruining the relationship with the customer that the company has been maintaining for the years. In this case, the company didn’t do any background check and when it did after this incident, it turns out that the particular individual was fired from the previous organisation because of bad behaviour and careless approach. Had the organisation done the background check previously, the situation with their valued customer could have been avoided. So, that’s why background checks are important when hiring an employee

3. To ensure the demands of the job are met

There have been cases in the past where employees hide something about them or just lie about the skills they don’t have. So, to ensure that the demands of the job are met, it becomes important to get the background check done. It not only helps the organisation know that they have made the right decision but also helps in increasing the reliability of its employees. To verify that the educational qualifications are correct and there was no previous history of being fired or even if the individual was fired what was the reason behind it or if the person does not have any criminal records, these are essential questions which determine the overall productivity of the organisation and ensures safety and job competency in the organisation.

4. Can not always rely on the instincts

A company is run on practical decisions and not emotional ones. So, just because your instincts are right for the person doesn’t mean you can hire him or her. A background check thus becomes necessary to know if you have actually made the right decision or you are living in an illusion. Even though its no denying that employment screening is the very hectic procedure and takes a lot of time and effort but eventually one would want the best for the company and in order to not compromise with the safety and profits of the company which is essential in the long run, background checks become an integral part of choosing the right candidate for the right job. And this is why it is an important step and can not be missed at any cost.

5. To encourage honesty in the applicants

Generally, it is observed that candidates are not 100% truthful when they provide their resume or when they come for the interview so when the applicants will know that background check is being done, their honesty will ultimately increase and will help the organisation in the longer run. Because let’s just agree to it that when you are 100% honest in your resume or the interview, it not only helps the employer see your true personality but also helps them to put their faith in you and you will turn out to be a reliable source for them in the important projects. So, it becomes extremely important for the candidates to be honest and straight forward in their interviews and resumes to get a good career and to reap the benefits of the same.
